The Meitetsu Kiha 8200 series is a diesel car developed to run on the JNR Takayama Line, and began operation in 1969. Like the earlier Kiha 8000 series, the width of the car was made smaller than JNR vehicles in order to operate on the Meitetsu Line, which has a small vehicle clearance, and the side windows were articulated windows similar to the company's 7000 series Panorama Car. This series had two engines for running, so its overall length was longer than the Kiha 8000 series. When it first appeared, it was painted in express paint similar to the JNR Kiha 58 series, but in 1976 it was upgraded to a limited express train and its paint was changed to be similar to the JNR Kiha 82 series.
